ISO 16929 Determination of the Degree of Disintegration of Plastic Materials in Composting Conditions

The ISO 16929 test is used to measure the degree of disintegration of plastic materials in a pilot-scale aerobic composting test under defined conditions. It can also assess the influence of the test material on the composting process quality and compost quality. But it cannot be used for the stop for the aerobic degradability of the specimen. This is an important standard since it identifies whether or not plastic will physically degrade into non-identifiable pieces during the composting process.

    Introduction to ISO 16929

With compostable plastics becoming more and more popular to replace traditional plastics, it is important to study the behavior of these materials in real composting processes. Disintegration, one of the primary criteria to be satisfied by a material to be regarded as compostable, is degradation, that is to say that the material must fragment so that it is not visually distinguishable from the composting mass.

    ISO 16929 Test Method

Test procedure The test is simply to dispose of the plastic material in a compost pile or bin that contains other organic materials (such as food scraps and shredded paper). The extent of degradation is evaluated at intervals, typically every 12 weeks, and is determined by visual characterization of the plastic material, mass loss, and fragmentation.

    ISO 16929 Sample Preparation

Specimen Details  The specimen used should be of identical form, ie,  shape, thickness, etc. If the specimen is large, then it should be reduced in size to 10x10cm for films and 5×5 cm for other products.

    ISO 16929 Results and Interpretation

The amount of decomposition is determined by passing the resulting matrix through a 2-mm sieve to recover any unbroken residue. The decrease in mass of the test portion is termed disintegration and is used to calculate the extent of disintegration.
